The canvas is made of high-grade spun polyester fabric, which is easy to clean and fade resistant (see here for more information about outdoor fabrics.) It is UV-protecting and water-resistant. The canopy features an air vent to allow air to flow through, preventing topples in gusty winds. The pole is made of aluminum and is powder coated with a beautiful bronze finish. It is a bit more solid than many of the other poles on this list and may be able to withstand the wind a bit more. Note: we suggest you close this umbrella up in any significant wind, just as a precaution. The base is made of steel, and the 8 ribs suspending the canopy are made of steel as well, and powder coated to a similar finish as the pole.

The Abba Patio cantilever umbrella features a much more detailed tilt functionality than the other umbrellas on this list, with a 5 position vertical tilt system that offers a great deal of flexibility. It is a Grade 5 fabric, and 98% UV resistant. The canvas should last about 1,000 hours before it starts to fade. This is a positive, but be sure to cover the umbrella when not in use to keep the canopy looking good for as long as possible! What about the frame and ribs? The frame is made of steel and is powder coated a coffee color for rust protection. Steel is an excellent frame material, providing heft and power to ensure the umbrella stays upright even in wind gusts. The ribs are also made of steel, which is a decent choice for umbrella ribs. Fiberglass is the ideal rib material, but it is quite expensive. Steel and aluminum are the next best choices and are acceptable in an umbrella of this scale and quality.

The Le Papillon offset umbrella has a really nice balance of price and quality. The design of this octagon umbrella is stylish and simple, with none of the curves that are common among less expensive cantilever umbrellas. When using the crank mechanism, be sure you crank it in a clockwise direction, so that it clicks when you use it. If you crank it counter-clockwise, it will open, but it won’t stay open. This is a bit of a confusing user experience, but once you know how it works, it shouldn’t be a problem. There are three separate levers on the umbrella pole. One of the levers opens and closes the umbrella. The second lever moves it up and down on the shaft, and the third rotate it left and right.
