What Size Hammock Stand Do I Need?

The biggest issue buyers come across when determining the hammock stand they want is whether the stand is the appropriate size to fit their hammock. Here we discuss this issue and explain how to determine appropriate hammock stand size.

Hammock Style

First off, you need to determine what kind of hammock you have. There are many different styles, but the main difference we are looking for here is whether your hammock is a bed-style hammock with spreader bars, or a cocoon style hammock, also known as a Brazilian or Mayan hammock.

Bed Style Hammock

If your hammock is a bed-style hammock, it features two spreader bars, usually made of wood, that serve to create a bed for users to lay upon. These hammocks have a bar on each end of the bed, with the bed in the middle. On the other side of the bar, the strands of fabric quickly converge to an eyelet, which is usually metal. The eyelets are attached to a hammock stand or other support system. These hammocks typically do not droop down as much as cocoon hammocks, and there is less concern of clearance above the ground with these hammocks.

Cocoon Style Hammock

Cocoon style hammocks, also known as Brazilian hammocks, Mayan hammocks, and Nicaraguan hammocks, etc. do not have spreader bars, but rather create a cocoon of fabric that the user is wrapped up in when inside the hammock. As you can see in the photo, these hammocks usually droop down lower than spreader bar hammocks, and there is a concern with the hammock hitting the ground on some stands. On the plus side, it is generally possible to shorten the overall length of these hammocks by tying knots in the rope ends at the appropriate length. Once you have determined your hammock style, you can measure the hammock and find out which stands will fit.

Hammock Bed Length vs Hammock Rope (Overall) Length

Most hammocks will stretch, so it can be difficult to ascertain the length of the hammock in an actual use condition! Determining if you hammock will fit a hammock stand is a bit of a pain. Most of the hammock stand manufacturers give an idea of whether or not a hammock will fit, but not exact specifications. Many of them are flexible, but in order to confirm your hammock will fit on a given stand, you should obtain both the hammock bed length and the hammock rope length. Additionally, most hammocks will stretch, so it can be difficult to ascertain the length of the hammock in an actual use condition! If you can get the hammock onto the stand, even if it is stretched taut, that’s a good start. Once you use it for a little while, it will likely stretch out as it becomes accustomed to the stand. As needed, you can raise the hammock up on the stand or lower it to keep the bottom of the now-stretched hammock at the appropriate height. Find the following lengths to get started:

Hammock Bed Length

On a bed-style hammock, this is the length between the two wooden spreader bars. On a Brazilian cocoon-style hammock, this is the length between the two ends of the woven fabric.

Hammock Rope Length

The rope length is the length of the overall end to end hammock, from eyelet to eyelet. This is the total length of the whole hammock.

Hammock Stand Weight Capacity

Another concern some buyers will have is the weight capacity of the hammock stand. Buyers should note that the weight capacity of the stand is not the same as the weight capacity of the hammock, of course! And you should go with the lower weight capacity when figuring out if a hammock and stand will work for your weight requirements. The Vivere Hammock Stand is a big stand, and while easy to assemble, and very sturdy, it is not really a great choice for a portable hammock. The frame is made of powder-coated steel tubing and is very solid. This stand is quite large, and is definitely not appropriate for bedroom use, as it is big and rather awkward. Assembly is pretty simple and only takes about 5 minutes. It is big, heavy, and bulky, and does not include a carrying case. If you are planning on assembling and disassembling your hammock stand daily we would suggest looking elsewhere. But for occasional take downs and reassembly, this is a nice stand. It is great for RV/car camping. Be sure that this stand is on reasonably-level ground, especially if the hammock is going to sway a lot. The package includes:

• Two short lengths of chain (note: some buyers did not receive chain)

General Size Guidelines

This unit will accommodate any spreader bar bed-style hammock between 10’ and 15’ in overall length. Vivere suggests using only bed-style hammocks with this stand, but Brazilian style cocoon hammocks will work as well. You may need some additional chain to get them to sway properly, but it is a minor adjustment.

The Sunnydaze Arc hammock stands are made of beefy Russian Pine hardwood and are stained a beautiful medium-toned finish. This hammock stand takes time to assemble and is not portable in any typical sense. Once it’s set up, you’ll probably want to leave it there! However, it certainly is attractive. The stand is quite pretty and is not particularly difficult to set up. The graceful curves of the Arc stand are quite modern in design, and when combined with a beautiful fringe hammock, looks especially striking. Down the road, there will likely be some maintenance with this hammock stand, especially if it is left out in the elements. The stain will fade in the sun, and it should be touched up periodically with new stain, or perhaps a coat of Linseed oil to bring out the luster once again. Included in the Arc hammock stand package is the following:

It can handle up to 450 lbs of weight (that would consist of the weight of a hammock and those on the hammock!), and it includes a handy carrying case. The poles just barely fit in the carrying case, so you’ll want another carrier for your hammock if necessary. The Space Saving steel hammock stand assembly and disassembly is pretty straightforward; it takes about 5 minutes to set up or take down. All of the bolts have hand grips, and you just twist or untwist as needed, and pack up or unpack. Setup is quick and easy. The height of the brackets that hold the hammock to the stand is adjustable, and can be raised up or down. Depending on the size of the hammock, you move the brackets up or down on the two angled shafts to support your hammock. If you have a shorter hammock (say 7’ or so), you could consider getting some chains that would attach to each end of the stand, and go through each eyelet of your hammock. If you have a longer hammock, 11’+, you could lower the brackets to extend the length of the rope as needed. This stand will fit most hammocks, but you may need to do a little tweaking of the brackets to get the height properly adjusted, or add some chain lengths to tie it all together. If you have a cloth hammock or other type of stretchy material, be sure to get the hammock as tight as possible on the stand, as it will stretch to accommodate the stand’s length. You don’t want your hammock to touch the floor! The legs are pretty solid and don’t sink into the ground too deeply, even if they are placed in sand or very soft ground conditions. This stand works well on a stone patio or other similar surface and does not feel tippy when swaying.

If you are planning on using this as a stand for an indoor sleeping hammock, you should measure up your room to be sure that this stand will fit! The Best Choice Products 15’ steel hammock stand is made of 2“, 12 gauge tubular steel, and is powder coated with a handsome textured black finish. It features 60’ welding for superior strength and safety, and the ends of the poles are capped with vinyl pieces for protection. The poles are interlocked with spring-pins, and the pieces attach to one another relatively simply, using umbrella-style snap-in pins. This is not really a portable hammock stand, given the size and weight of this unit, and the lack of a carrying case. The package includes two chains, approximately 2’ long, to attach your hammock to.

General Size Guidelines

• Hammocks approximately 13’-15’ in overall length should fit in this hammock stand quite well, regardless of design.

Once the hammock is attached to the stand, the fabric will stretch out when you climb on. The stand should be able to handle most hammocks on the market, including quite large ones.
