Acapulco Chairs are classic mid-Century indoor/outdoor lounge chairs with loads of style and panache. Created in Acapulco, Mexico, in the 1950s by an unknown designer, these chairs became icons of Acapulco in the 1950s, when it was one of the most popular destinations in the world for Hollywood celebrities and Washington DC politicians. It is now very difficult to find original Acapulco chairs, but several furniture makers have stepped in to provide replicas. One of the best replicas is the Innit Acapulco Chair line, by Innit Designs. These chairs are typically more expensive than some of the cheaper competition but are a step up in quality, functionality, and style.

In this article, we will take a close look at Innit’s Acapulco-style chairs, and consider the pros and cons of these chairs versus the competition.

The Acapulco Chair

The Acapulco Chair is a beautiful, egg-shaped webbed chair that provides a great deal of style while keeping the occupant cool and comfortable. Supposedly inspired by Mexican woven hammocks, these chairs blend the woven hammock concept with a traditional outdoor lounge chair. With a metal three-legged base and an iconic woven frame, the Acapulco Lounge chair is one of the few iconic indoor/outdoor chairs in existence.

Because the designer of the Acapulco chair is unknown, there is no place to purchase “authentic” Acapulco chairs. It is possible to find original Acapulco chairs, but these chairs often have had their webbing replaced over the years, and may have sustained rust damage if they were left outside.

Fortunately, there is a new generation of designers who have begun to remake the Acapulco chair and to create spin-off designs as well.

Innit Designs

Innit Designs is one of the best manufacturers of Acapulco chairs around, and they have also created several other furniture pieces based off of the Acapulco chair concept, such as their Acapulco Rocker, the Baby Acapulco Chair, and the Innit Lounge chair. All of these are discussed below.

Innit Furniture Assembly

Virtually all of Innit’s chairs need to be assembled, but assembly is extremely simple. The chairs come in two pieces and must be screwed together. You can see an assembly video here:

The chair attaches together pretty quickly, and the tension of the chair keeps everything hanging together. If you’re having trouble getting the pieces to line up, turn the chair over as shown so that you can push the rods into the proper slots.

Three screws hold everything tight. Check the screws occasionally and tighten as needed.

Some buyers have reported not receiving the hardware for their chairs, and if you do not receive hardware, let Innit Designs know. These chairs should not be used without the screws, as the pieces can come apart and whoever is sitting in the chair can have a nasty fall.

The Innit Acapulco Chair

The Innit Acapulco Chair is certainly not the cheapest Acapulco chair replica on the market, but it is very good quality and is available in the widest array of color options around.

With three different base colors (white, black, and chrome) and a huge array of colors, there are a grand total of 25 different Innit Acapulco lounge chair combinations to choose from!

Note that only the chairs with powder coated frames are suitable for outdoor use.

The Details

The Innit Acapulco chair is made of a two-piece galvanized steel base. Some models come with a rust-protective powder coat and some without, depending on the finish chosen. The seat support structure is made with a weatherproof vinyl weave.

This chair is positioned in a natural slight recline and is a bit more pear-shaped, or avocado-shaped, than some of the other chairs available. The Innit Acapulco lounge chair is definitely a lounge chair and not an upright chair.

The weave is made of PE Vinyl and is UV protected for long lasting color fastness even in bright sun. It is pleasantly breathable, and offers great support!

Note: some have encountered issues with the paint job, and if your chair is missing paint in some areas, be sure to contact Innit designs immediately.

Often it is an easy fix to just grab some Rustoleum paint and paint the chair base, but obviously, this should have been done correctly to start with. Regardless, if you ignore the exposed metal, the chair will rust in that spot if left outside.

Indoor/Outdoor Use

The Innit Acapulco chair comes in two different frame structures, either powder coated steel or chrome/copper. The powder coated frames are suitable for outdoor use, as they are rust-protected. The other frames are not suited for outdoor use, so beware.

Even if you have the powder-coated chairs, we still recommend covering them or moving them inside when possible, as these chairs will look great both indoors and outdoors, and keeping them away from excess rain and sun will only increase their longevity!

They are not cheap, so there’s no sense in letting them degrade more quickly than necessary.

The Bottom Line

These comfortable, stylish, stackable indoor/outdoor chairs are a great choice for a lounge chair. They are on the expensive side, but the versatility of the Acapulco chair means that it can do double duty as both an indoor and outdoor lounge chair.

Be sure that you get a powder coated chair frame if you plan on using it outside (as we assume most people will do). This does limit your color choices somewhat, but it is important!

These Baby Acapulco chairs are obviously not the cheapest kids chair around, but they are a lot of fun and are among the most stylish children’s seating around.

The Details

The Innit Baby Acapulco Chair is supplied in the same huge array of colors that the full sized Acapulco Chair is supplied in, so you’re guaranteed to find a perfect color combination for your child.

The choice of calling this a “Baby Acapulco Chair” seems a bit unwise to us, as it’s not really for babies, but rather for kids between 3-10 or so. The “Kids Acapulco Chair” may have been more accurate, but “Baby Acapulco” sounds like better marketing-speak, so we get the idea. Regardless, this is not a petite adult’s chair, nor is it a baby chair. Figure it as a kids chair for sizing, with a 10″ seat height.

Indoor/Outdoor Use

The base material is galvanized steel, and is available with or without a powder coat, depending on the type of finish chosen. If you plan to use your Baby Acapulco Chair outdoors, you need to get a powder coated version in order to ensure that it does not rust.

Even if you get a powder coated frame, we still suggest moving this chair inside or covering it when not in use. if you have an Acapulco Lounge Chair as well, you can cover both chairs with the same cover, which is easy!

Innit Acapulco Rocking Chair

The Innit Acapulco Rocking Chair uses the same structure as the Lounge chair for the top woven piece, but replaces the tripod legs with a creative rocking mechanism! This chair becomes even more of a relaxing, lounge chair experience when the rocking legs are added, while the cool styling stays the same.

The Details

The positioning of the Acapulco Rocking chair is slightly different than the Acapulco Lounge Chair (a lower back, and a more reclined angle), pushing things further into relaxation territory.

However, the center of the chair is not exactly the center of the base. So you will find that when sitting in the chair, you’ll want to keep your legs on the ground to keep the chair from tipping too far forward (see the image at the top of how the woman is sitting in the lounge chair with her feet on the ground).

Some users may find this unusual, as it is different than most other rocking chairs.

The woven area is made of the same UV-protected PE vinyl fabric as the rest of Innit’s chairs and is available in the usual myriad colors Innit offers.

The Base is made of Galvanized Steel, which is fairly lightweight but sturdy, and depending on the finish chosen, is sometimes powder coated for outdoor protection.

Indoor/Outdoor Use

If you plan to use your Acapulco Rocker outdoors, be sure to get a powder coated version, as opposed to the chrome or copper finish. The powder coat is designed to resist rust and is much more suitable to being in outdoor conditions than the non-powder coat units are.

The vinyl cords are weather-resistant, though we still encourage users to cover their chair or move it inside when not in use, as keeping the chairs out of the sun, rain, and snow will only increase their longevity.

The Bottom Line

If you really want a rocking Acapulco chair, the Innit Rocking Chair is a good choice, but the bottom line to us is that the original design is relaxing enough without the need for the rocking legs, and the setup of the rocking chair is not as comfortable as it could be.

These are also not stackable, unlike the rest of We suggest sticking with the original Lounge Chair unless you are really anxious to have a rocking Acapulco chair.

The Innit Chair is a riff on the Acapulco Chair design, with a more upright positioning and a practically circular frame setup, as opposed to the pear-shaped frame that most Acapulco chairs feature.

Users end up sitting more upright in these chairs than they would in a traditional Acapulco chair, and some people may find the more upright position to be more comfortable, easier to get in and out of, and more practical for everyday use.

The Details

The Innit Designs Rocker chair features the comfortable and versatile setup of the Innit Designs Innit chair top, with a rocker base for relaxation. The rocking part of the chair is a nice feature, but it does clash a bit with the more upright setup of the Innit Chair compared to the Acapulco Rocking Chair. Still, it is quite comfortable and the rocking capability is a nice attraction.

Indoor/Outdoor Use

Like all of Innit’s designs, it is very important to choose a powder coated base if you plan on using this chair outside. The powder coat will protect the chair from rust. While we like the looks of several of the non-powder-coated options, the ability to use these chairs both indoors and outdoors greatly outweighs the styling.

And besides, with so many colors available, you’re guaranteed to find something you like that will still work outside.

The weave that forms the structure of the seat is made of PE vinyl and is UV protected. It is weather-resistant and durable, though we still encourage covering or bringing these chairs indoors when not in use. They’re pretty expensive, so it’s best to keep them in tip-top shape.

The Bottom Line

The Innit Designs Innit Rocking Chair is a great chair and is quite comfortable. It is excellent for reading and relaxing. Still, we are hesitant to recommend the rocking models, as they are not stackable, and are angled in such a way that they may not be as functional as some other traditional rocking chairs.

We prefer the traditional bases; they look a little bit nicer and more modern, and while they don’t rock, they are plenty comfortable as is.
