Ground Preparation and Assembly

In this section, we discuss the process of getting your area prepped and your Rubbermaid Gable Roof Storage Shed Built!

The ground preparation is perhaps the most difficult part of the shed building process. Make sure you have a level surface before starting construction. If you don’t have a level surface to work on, you may find that part way through the assembly process, your joints aren’t lining up. At that point, you will start to get frustrated with the whole experience! By getting your base as level as possible, you will make the assembly process much easier.

Ground Preparation

The ground preparation is perhaps the most difficult part of the shed building process. We break down the relevant steps here:

  1. Determine the location of the shed. You’ll need to find the right spot to place your shed, and the more level the space is when you start, the better. Be sure to check your local building ordinance and/or Homeowners Association documents to confirm that the shed can be placed in the location you intend to use. Many cities and towns prefer any buildings to be at least a few feet off of the lot lines, so check before you get the whole thing installed.
  2. Check the existing ground for level conditions. The area you need to be level is at least 84“ x 86“ square.
    • Use a mason’s string and a tape measure to mark off the area, and level the ground across with masonry sand, stone, concrete, or any other solid material you choose. Level across the area with a 4’ level to ensure that the whole foundation area is solid.
    • Alternately, if your ground is not level, you could consider building a wood frame on blocks to create a level area. You’ll need an 84“ x 86“ level base, and the wood should be pressure treated, and rated for ground contact.
  3. Check for drainage. Ideally, you don’t want water flowing downhill toward the shed, so if possible, place the shed on a raised area to ensure water travels away from the shed, rather than toward it.

Assembly

The Rubbermaid 7x7 shed assembly process is not very difficult and can be completed in less than half a day, assuming two people are working with decent tools. You can view the assembly instructions online to get a sense of how difficult the task will be. If the doors on your shed do not close tightly, the problem is probably that your floor is not level. The key to a smooth assembly and operation of this shed is to get a proper level base. Pay close attention to that, and you’ll be good to go. The tools you will need to get the Roughneck Big Max storage shed together are:

  • Power drill/screwdriver (a good quality one with a couple of batteries, because there are a lot of screws!)
  • Two step ladders
  • Philips Screwdriver
  • Rubber Mallet
  • 4’ Level
  • Gloves
  • Liquid Soap
  • Utility Knife
  • Safety glasses

Disassembly and Moving

Once you have the Rubbermaid Roughneck gable storage shed built, you’ll most likely want to leave it in place. However, if you’re a renter, or if you are moving, you may want to disassemble the storage shed and take it with you. This would require some work, but it is possible to take this apart and re-assemble it. The disassembly process is a bit of a pain. The roof panels especially are a challenge to take apart. You’ll need to be careful to organize all the fasteners and hardware, but if you want to, you can take this shed with you when you move!

Roughneck 7x7 Shed Details

Color and Aesthetics

The color of the shed is a bit difficult to determine based on the photos, but it is a tan color with tan doors, and a dark grayish roof and interior floor. The Rubbermaid Roughneck 7x7 shed is not a beautiful piece of modern architecture, but it does not aim to be. It is highly functional, and will help you keep all your maintenance equipment out of your main house or garage!

Structure

Rubbermaid Roughneck Siding Profile

The walls of the Rubbermaid Roughneck 7x7 shed are constructed of a dual-face resin material and are quite sturdy. The siding has a Dutch Lap profile and is not unattractive. The roof panels are a slippery plastic material, and the gable design makes snow typically slide off the roof pretty quickly. Snow is generally not an issue with these sheds, though if there is a whole lot of snow on the shed roof, we would suggest scraping it off.

Moisture

Rubbermaid Rougneck Top View

The Rubbermaid Roughneck shed is largely watertight. Moisture can come in, especially through the vents, but the vents also help allow fresh air to flow through the unit. It is not damp-proof, but it is quite water resistant. The two skylights let light into the interior of the shed and help make the inside feel more comfortable. They are well-engineered, and by and large are not sources of leaks and water.

Weight and Wind Issues

This kit is so heavy, especially with some equipment inside of it, that it is unlikely to move unless there are incredibly severe winds. There is no kit included to attach the Rubbermaid Roughneck shed to the ground, but if you really wanted to, you could bolt it to whatever base material you have.

Rodent Questions

Properly built, the Rubbermaid Roughneck Gable Storage Shed is rodent-proof. Assuming you haven’t done anything wrong in installation, there is no real point for mice or squirrels to access the interior of the shed. If your shed was assembled improperly, there may be gaps that form around the doors or at the corners of the unit, and animals may get in there. Again, if the foundation space is level, you should have no problems with rodents.

The Interior Space

Roughneck Storage Shed Interior

The interior area of the Rubbermaid Roughneck storage shed is roomy and comfortable, with good light coming from the skylights and the front doors, and decent airflow from the two vents. The 7’x7’ space is large enough to put a riding lawn mower and some tools in, and still have enough room to walk around. The interior space is well designed, and is practical for a variety of uses, as mentioned above. Use your imagination, and the Roughneck Storage shed will be a great asset in your lawn and garden space.

Accessories

Pegboard is not included, but if you plan to hang tools from the walls of this shed, you may want to pick up some pegboard. Holes in the walls are pre-drilled to hang hooks and pegboard or other suspension mechanisms, so you can use the shed in a variety of ways, depending on your needs. You may also want to install shelves or other storage mechanisms in the Rubbermaid Roughneck gable shed. There are no custom-designed solutions for shelving, but most any shelf track system will work on the Rubbermaid storage shed walls. A simpler option than wall-mounted shelves is a free-standing shelf system. These shelves will hold more weight and can be moved around as needed. A free-standing tool tower may be easier to deal with than built-in shelves, and more practical than installing wall-mounted shelves. If you want to secure your shed, you’ll want to pick up a padlock or other locking mechanism for it. The two can lock together, preventing unauthorized people from getting into the shed. Of course, these units are made of resin plastic, so if someone really wants to get in, they can easily cut through the walls with a saw blade! But for typical outdoor equipment, the addition of a padlock is sufficient to secure this unit.
