Assembly and Maintenance

Assembly of the Suncast DBW9200 deck box is very simple and can be completed in under 20 minutes. Essentially the panels snap together to form the box, and most of the assembly involves installing the metal rod that provides strength to the lid and installing the hinge mechanisms. The DBW9200 has a gently-sloping top, which is good from an attractiveness standpoint, but the curve makes it inappropriate for use as a table for glasses, mugs, etc. It also makes putting a cushion on the bench a little bit awkward. There may be a structural reason for this curve, but to us having a flat top would make this deck box even more flexible. That said, the top of the deck box is comfortable enough for people to sit on for a reasonable amount of time. It’s not going to replace the chaise lounge, but for extra seating in a pinch, the Suncast DBW9200 excels.

Materials and Construction

The Suncast Deck Box is constructed of molded plastic in a wicker pattern, in a mocha color scheme. The panels are solid and are not actually woven. However, the finish is quite high quality, and the dark color combined with the woven look makes the DBW9200 look very much like standard woven resin wicker furniture, which is excellent. The resin panels are UV, mold, mildew, rot, and fade resistant. They do not need to be painted, and can easily be cleaned with a hose-down with water, or perhaps a soft bristle brush and a mild detergent.

The Lid

The lid of the DBW9200 has a reinforced steel rod in the under-section and is capable of handling over 250 lbs of weight, from people sitting on the box. It is a little bit higher than most chairs, and the curved bottom makes it a bit awkward to sit upon, but for overflow seating, or for occasional seating, this is an excellent choice. When the lid closes, there is a very slight “catch” but it essentially rests on the walls of the deck box; it does not snap shut with a significant seal. Still, when the lid is closed and a lock is installed, the deck box is quite tightly secured, and bugs and critters should not be able to get in.

The Hinges

The hinges on this deck box are made of plastic, and they do lock in place and hold the lid upright (with the help of two straps). However, they are not soft close, and when you begin to close the box, the lid will flop right down. The plastic hinges are not as high quality as metal pistons found in more expensive deck boxes, but for this price range, they are appropriate in our eyes.

Water Resistance

Suncast considers this deck box water resistant, and not waterproof. However, for all intents and purposes, the DBW9200 will keep its contents quite dry. There is a chance water could conceivably get into the box, but from what we have seen it is unlikely and is nearly waterproof.

Ventilation

The Suncast deck box has a few small vent holes recessed by the handles, which allow air to flow through the deck box. This helps prevent mold and mildew build up. The vents are set back, and the water should not be able to get in. However, damp air will be able to enter the deck box.
