Which one will be the best gas grill under $500?
When getting into the higher end gas grills, some additional features and size configurations become available, and the grill quality and durability improves dramatically. If you’re the kind of person who likes to purchase an item once and have it work for a long time, this is the article to read.
In this article, we will look at several options for the best propane grill under $500, compare and contrast the features, and see which ones shine.
FUEGO FELG21S Element Gas Grill, Stainless
The Fuego FELG21S Element Gas Grill is an unexpected newcomer to the best gas grills under $500 list. It doesn’t look anything like a standard gas grill, and looks more like a Star Wars robot than a cooking apparatus. It’s guaranteed to get a million comments and to become a conversation piece when it’s out on the back porch. This grill was designed by former Apple Chief Designer Robert Brunner, and it looks like it! It comes in two color options: stainless steel and carbon steel. The Fuego shown here in stainless, though carbon steel is a good deal cheaper if you like the look.
The Details
It’s hard to get a sense of the size of this grill on the photos, but it is 36″ high (43″ to the top of the handle) and 23″ in diameter, so basically it has a circular cooking surface, about 2′ wide. This translates into 346″ of primary cooking area, which is enough for approximately 16 quarter-pound burgers to be cooked at once. There is plenty of grill area here! For materials, the outside is powder coated steel, and the cooking grate is made of 21″ heavy-duty 15lb porcelain-enamel cast iron. The grate creates perfect sear marks. For fuel, it is designed to use propane tanks, but it can be adapted to natural gas if needed. It is quite efficient on the propane usage, and generally it will cook for 20 hours on its dual-zone cooking surface before needing a propane tank change over.
The Fuego FELG21S is made from a 21,000BTU dual ring stainless steel burner, and its heat system functions more like a traditional dome charcoal grill than a typical hood gas grill. The Fuego is a rapidly-heating grill, which can get up to 500′ in under five minutes, and can get up to 700′ max temperature for perfect searing. The two-burner system offers two modes: the outside burner only for indirect heating, and both burners for direct grilling.
The dome lid is not hinged, but it does have a lip to allow it to be hung from the side hook. It has wheels and handles, which make it very easy to move in and out of the cooking area. A cover is recommended in order to keep the grill clean and rust free.
Assembly and Cleaning
For assembly, the Fuego grill comes un-assembled, but includes clear directions to get it up and put together. Typically assembly takes under an hour. For cleaning, this grill is a bit more of a pain to clean than some of the other grills, though it’s not terrible. Due to the circular burners you must clean around and under, it can be difficult to get everything clean. You may want to line the (removable) drip tray with foil, and just extract the foil and replace when needed for quicker clean up time.
The Bottom Line
This unit is a bit of a wild card. It looks totally different than any grill on the market, and really functions quite nicely. It is a very good grill, especially if you are into modern design, and enjoy going against the standard looks. In our opinion, it is the best propane grill under $500!

The Best Gas Grill Under $500
The Weber Spirit Gas Grill line is absolutely stellar, and is a classic. For many, it is the best gas grill around.
However, we’re going out on a limb and picking our favorite as the FUEGO FELG21S Gas Grill. It’s so unique looking, makes such a strong design statement, and backs that statement up with solid functionality. The Weber is great, but we love the Fuego!
Happy grilling!
