How To Assemble the Rubbermaid 121-Gallon Storage Shed
The Rubbermaid 3749 Vertical Storage shed is not terribly difficult to assemble, and the only required tools are gloves and a rubber mallet! You simply get the panels in place and using a rubber mallet, snap the pieces together so that they fit properly.
That’s it!
Some of the edges of the shed pieces are quite sharp, and we suggest you have some gloves handy to keep your hands protected from harm. Also, having a second person to assist with assembly makes a big difference in general.

Level Ground
You really want to get the ground below this shed as level as possible, as it is tall, and therefore could tip over if the ground is not level. If necessary, you can build a wood platform, pour concrete, use paver blocks, or even just pack the dirt solid and level. Get the ground underneath this shed nice and even and you’ll be happy and safe.
Shelving for Rubbermaid Vertical Storage Shed
The Rubbermaid 3749 Storage Shed does not include shelving, but there are several slots already molded into the resin plastic that are designed to house shelves. This design allows for a great deal of flexibility, as you can choose the height of your shelves easily, and move your shelves around to different heights as you change the use of your Rubbermaid vertical storage shed.
Unfortunately, Rubbermaid does not supply any pre-cut shelving for these units, so you’ll have to roll your own.
You can use a variety of materials to build your shelf, but probably the easiest is to use 1″ x 10″ common pine. You can use fir, hemlock, etc., but pine is best because it is inexpensive, available virtually everywhere, and strong. Pine the best shelf material in these sorts of circumstances.
Rubbermaid 3749 Shelf Dimensions
We have put together a template diagram showing the dimensions of the Rubbermaid Vertical Shed shelf. The 9 1/4″ depth is essentially the same depth that you would get from using a standard 1×10 board, and you’ll want 2′ 4 1/4″ of length (or 28 1/4). Before you go cut, check your individual shed for exact length, as it could possibly vary a bit from the recommended length.
Once you have the boards cut to length, you’ll need to cut out the two 45′ angles from the back. Measure in 3 1/4″ on each side, and draw a line between these points. Cut along the 45′ angle on both sides, and you’ll have your shelf complete in no time!
Shelf Alternatives
Instead of making the shelf go all the way out to the end of the notch, you could consider making narrower shelves, and then hanging a lawn mower or small snow thrower in front of the shelves. It all depends on how you want to use the Rubbermaid vertical storage shed!
The Details
While the Rubbermaid vertical outdoor storage sheds are nicely water resistant, there is no rubber membrane on the doors. The doors latch together pretty tightly, but it is possible for water, insects, spiders, etc. to get inside.
No screened ventilation is present on these storage sheds, though the doors do not fit extremely snugly, so it is not imperative that there be ventilation. Fresh air generally moves through the shed.
The Rubbermaid Vertical Storage Shed handles hot weather and bright direct sun pretty well. It is UV resistant and doesn’t seem to get brittle even under direct, hot sun.
The resin plastic exterior material is quite weather resistant and cleans up easily. However, it is not easy to paint or otherwise change the look of this shed. If you don’t like the greige color, you may want to look elsewhere for a shed.
Should you want to secure the shed to make sure that it doesn’t topple over, you’ll have to drill some holes. There is no pre-designed way to attach this shed to the walls of a house, or to the foundation structure. You’ll need to drill through the back, bottom, or sides in order to create a mounting point to secure it.
The Bottom Line
The Rubbermaid 17 cf vertical storage shed is great for those who need to store some primarily tall items, such as lawn tools, gardening equipment, strollers, kids bikes, etc. It’s well made, and quite water resistant. It will work both inside and outside and is pretty secure against intrusion.
