Best Ethanol Fireplace Fuel For your Ventless Fireplace

Ignis Bio Ethanol Fuel 12 Pack

Ethanol fireplaces are really cool new entrants into the fireplace market. With so many interesting styles and designs, and so many flexible options, these fireplaces can go just about anywhere, indoors or outdoors! But one of the biggest concerns with these fireplaces is which fuel to purchase. There are many different options, and while most companies recommend you use only their fuel in your fireplace, for the most part, the fuels are perfectly interchangeable. In our eyes, the Best Ethanol Fireplace Fuel available at the moment is the Moda Flame Bio-Ethanol Fireplace Fuel .

Photo

There are many reasons for this. Firstly, it doesn’t leave any soot or nasty residue behind after burning like some other ethanol fireplace fuels do. Secondly, there is no significant odor given off while burning. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, it is very competitively priced. What more could you possibly want? For more information on the Moda Flame Bio-Ethanol Fuel, see below.

Runner Up

Best Ethanol Fireplace Fuel

The second best ethanol fireplace fuel on the market, in our opinion, is the Ignis Bio Fuel . It’s odorless and eco-friendly and works well in a number of settings. However, while it does produce tall, beautiful flames that burn for hours, it does leave a slight black residue behind after burning. For that reason, we’ve put it as runner-up. Also, we should note that as the quantity of Ignis Fuel purchased goes up, the price goes down significantly, so consider quantity when ordering.

Budget Pick

Bio-Ethanol Fireplace Fuel

There’s not a great deal of difference between the prices of many of these fuels, but if you are on a budget, every penny counts. In that case, you may want to consider Regal Flame Prime Ventless Bio Ethanol fireplace fuel. It produces nice clean, tall flames that burn for hours and won’t leave any nasty soot behind. The only thing that lets it down slightly in comparison to the Moda Flame fireplace fuel is that is does produce a little smoke, which can get irritating in an indoor environment. If you can get over that, you’ll get on just fine using this fuel. We also note that, in general, buying in larger quantities results in significant savings, so keep an eye on the quantity you’re purchasing when shopping for the best price.

Bio-Ethanol Fireplace Fuel Reviews

In this section, we’ll take a close look at five popular ethanol fuels, and determine which is the best buy.

Ignis Bio Fuel 12 Pack

Ignis Bio Ethanol Fuel 12 Pack

Ignis’ entry in the biofuel market is a solid one, and is available in a wide variety of quantities, with prices that go down significantly per quart as the number of quarts increase.

Key Points at a Glance
  • Quantity: 12 x 1-quart bottles
  • No harmful fumes, soot, or ash when burning
  • Made in the USA
  • 100% natural ingredients
The Details

This fireplace fuel works great indoors or outdoors. It’s reasonably priced and works well in any ethanol fireplace. While it may take a moment to get going, once it does, it kicks out a lot of heat. Like many ethanol fireplace fuels, there may be a significant pop or flash when the fire is first lit, due to the accumulation of vapors, but once lit that won’t happen again. Some fireplace fuels tend to smell when burning, but you don’t get that with the Ignis Bio Fuel. It burns bright and produces lots of heat, but the smoke produced can leave a black residue on the glass over time. Be sure to pour into your ethanol fireplace only what you intend to burn this session, as unused ethanol fuel tends to evaporate quickly, leading to significant waste. Store your fuel in an out of the way area, away from heat sources, and ideally in a metal container if possible. This fuel can be left outside in a storage shed without issue.

Regal Flame Prime Ventless Bio Ethanol Fireplace Fuel - 12 Quarts

Regal Flame Prime Ethanol Fireplace Fuel 12 Pack

The Regal Flame Prime ventless ethanol fuel is another good quality fuel, sold at a decent price. Like many ethanol fuels, the larger the quantity purchased, the more significant the savings, so keep an eye on quantity when ordering.

Key Points at a Glance
  • Quantity: 12 x 1-quart bottles
  • Bitterant added to prevent ingestion
  • Plant-based fuel
  • 100% clean burning - no odor, no soot, no mess
  • Perfect for use ethanol tabletop fires, alcohol stoves, tiki torches and more
The Details

Ethanol Fuel and the Environment

A clean burning liquid fuel that’s suitable for use in a number of places, this ethanol fuel is vent-free, smokeless, and has very little smell. For safety and to deter children and pets, a bitter compound has been added (“Bitterant”) to the fuel to dissuade accidentally swallowing. This is a nice feature for those with kids and pets. Like most all ethanol fuels, it’s made from 100% natural ingredients. Regal Flame Prime is non-toxic, eco-friendly, and complies will international government safety regulations. Like most ethanol fuels, be sure to only pour in the amount you intend to burn in one session, as if you leave unspent fuel in the ethanol burner, it is prone to evaporate pretty rapidly. Always be sure to wait until the burner is cool before adding more fuel, and use a funnel when filling. This fuel can be used in Tiki Torches, but in general, that doesn’t make much sense financially or logistically. Click here for information on Tiki Torch fuel (spoiler alert: Eucalyptus oil is where it’s at!)

Regal Flame Ultra Pure Ventless Bio Ethanol Fireplace Fuel - 12 Quarts

Regal Flame Ultra Ventless Ethanol Fireplace Fuel 12 Pack

This fuel is essentially the same as the Regal Flame Prime, it just has a different colored cap. It is included for price comparison reasons, as sometimes one of these goes on sale while the other isn’t, so it’s worth looking at.

Key Points at a Glance
  • 12 x 1-quart bottles
  • Made will all natural ingredients
  • Clean burning - no soot or toxic fumes
  • Child safety formula includes bitterant
  • Great for use in multiple places
The Details

Another great fireplace fuel on offer by Regal Flame, the Ultra Pure Ventless Bio-Ethanol Fuel. Like the Prime Ventless version on offer from Regal Flame, this fuel burns really well. It’s great value for money in comparison to some others out there and only smells slightly when first lit. You can use it indoors or outdoors and is perfect for using in wall-mounted or freestanding fires, fire burners, tiki torches and more. As we said above, it typically doesn’t make financial sense to burn ethanol in a tiki torch, so it’s best to stick with tiki torch fuel. Like many ethanol fuels, the Regal Flame Ultra ethanol fireplace fuel may give a startling POP! when ignited initially, so be prepared for that. This POP! occurs due to vapor build up while fueling. Once the fireplace is lit, it won’t happen again. Be sure to only fill your fireplace when cold, and only add what you intend to burn in one sitting, as ethanol can evaporate fairly quickly. There is no danger from evaporation, but it can hit the wallet.

Moda Flame 1 Quart Bio-Ethanol Fireplace Fuel 12 Bottles

Moda Flame Ethanol Fuel 12 Pack, the Best Ethanol Fireplace Fuel

The Moda Flame Bio Ethanol Fireplace Fuel is produced by Regal Flame but is sold by Moda Flame. Should you have a Moda Flame Fireplace, you can use this fuel, but there’s no requirement to use any specific brand of fuel with your ethanol fireplace, so don’t worry about that.

Key Points at a Glance
  • 12 x 1-quart bottles
  • Made from all renewable resources
  • Produced in the USA
  • Clean burning means no soot, smoke, or odor
  • Designed for ventless fireplaces
The Details

This premium bioethanol fuel will keep your fire roaring for hours. Made from all natural plant-based resources, the Moda Flame ethanol fuel is ideal for use in all ventless fireplaces, not just the Moda Flame brand fireplaces. It burns cleanly, so you’ve no worries about any black smoke or thick residue getting on your belongings and has a bitterant added to it to help prevent any children or pets swallowing it by accident. This fuel is safe enough to be used indoors or out. It produces a big enough flame to kick out a large amount of heat that will burn evenly for hours. The quantity to price ratio on the Moda Flame fuel is a bit unusual, so keep an eye on each individual price level when purchasing. It is generally a fairly inexpensive fuel, which is great, but look at how the different quantities and prices interact when shopping. Like most ethanol fuels, the Moda Flame can safely be stored anywhere away from heat and can be stored outside. When using, be sure the ethanol burner is cool, and fill with a funnel. Don’t pour any more than is necessary for a single sitting, as excess fuel has a tendency to evaporate over time, wasting fuel.

SMARTFUEL Bio-Ethanol Fireplace Fuel : 1 Case (12 liters)

SmartFuel Bio Ethanol Fireplace Fuel

SMARTFUEL is a high-quality fuel but is priced pretty poorly, which is a significant downside. It is also only available in a few different quantity options, limiting the ability to save with bulk purchases.

Key Points at a Glance
  • Quantity: 12 x 1-quart bottles
  • Safe for use indoors or outdoors
  • Innovative Safety-Pour bottle
  • Child and Pet-Friendly
  • Eco-friendly
The Details

The biggest selling point of the SmartFuel Ethanol Fireplace Fuel is the safety-pour bottle. This is a nice feature, not found on other ethanol fuels, but really, the purchase of a simple funnel is all that is required and is more efficient, and cheaper, than getting multiple bottles of SmartFuel. This fuel is very similar in its burn qualities to the Moda Flame ethanol fuel, with no major odor, and no significant smoke or soot, however, it is more expensive per liter. We suggest sticking with the Moda Flame instead, unless you really like the SmartFuel bottles and prefer them to using a funnel. Like virtually all ethanol fuels, make sure the burner is cool before filling and be sure to only fill the burner with the fuel you plan to use in one session. Excess fuel has a tendency to evaporate, wasting precious fuel.

Conclusion

Hopefully, by now you will be a little more clued up as to what your options are when it comes to ethanol fireplace fuels and some of the best products there are available. In the end, we feel the Moda Flame Bio-Ethanol Fireplace Fuel is by far your best choice. It produces consistent heat and will not smoke you out in the process. It’s a reliable fuel, just watch out for price discrepancies in relation to quantity.
