The Fiskars X27 Splitting Axe is like that European car you take for a test drive – it’s hard to go back to other axes after you’ve experienced the way it handles. The X27 benefits from the technology that makes it strong, lightweight, yet very effective. It feels similar to the best tactical tomahawks. The Finnish manufacturer is well-known for their cutting blade technology used in everything from scissors to machetes. They have come up with a design that is sharply efficient at splitting most logs when used by most people.

The Details
The Fiskars X27 performs efficiently, boasting of a “one swing split” from the manufacturer. It accomplishes this by some rather advanced technology that delivers a tool that is is easy to use, easy to swing, and easy to maintain.
Designed for users who are taller than 5’9”, the handle, measuring 36 inches, is longer than other Fiskars splitting axes. The advantages of using an axe that is ergonomically proportioned for your size are evident from the first swing.
For users under 5’9” or so, Fiskars makes an identically-designed axe with a shorter handle and lighter weight, known as the Fiskars X25 Axe. Even with the relative lightness of the X27, the sheer length of the handle may be unwieldy for a shorter customer. The length in a shorter person’s hands will likely not provide the easy swing Fiskars promotes.
The weight distribution is optimized, giving maximum power with each strike. The entire Fiskars “X” series has a special design that moves the weight primarily to the head of the axe. The overall lighter weight of this axe and the proportions make each swing faster – much like using an aluminum baseball bat. The end result is a deeper cut and less user fatigue.
The X27 does not need to be used with a maul or wedge, and, in fact, is not designed for this.
Materials and Construction
The overall lightness of this axe is achieved by using a handle made of Fibercomp, a carbon fiber-reinforced material that is both extremely strong and very durable. This yields a tool that may look a little different from other axes, but delivers very well.
The axehead, constructed of forged steel, also has an innovative design that may look a bit different to the first time user. The blade is convex and beveled. Fiskars, as it turns out, has a proprietary design that helps keep the edge sharp and the cutting edge maximized. It also has a low-friction coating that provides cleaner cuts and easier removal from the log.
The FiberComp handle is made of the material also used in the aerospace and naval industries. The axehead is integrated into the handle in what Fiskars calls a PermaHead design. The whole head is insert-molded and will not separate from the handle – no flying off.
The entire axe simply looks long, lean and efficient. Helpful features include the non-slip grip as well as the safety orange handle end for easy spotting when you’ve set it down and walked away.
It’s a little different, but the Finnish design has been an international award winner since 2010.
Buyers seem to have a “love at first swing” relationship with their X27. Most find that it splits all types of wood easily, and yes – often with one strike. It does perform best, though, on small-to-medium sized pieces. The few problems reported seemed to pop up when working with large pieces – over 18” in diameter. The X27 was more likely to stick or slip on those logs.
Accessories
The most significant accessory for the Fiskars X27 is the Fiskars blade sharpener. The X27 is pretty easy to sharpen – most buyers touch it up every few uses.
The manufacturer recommends using their own blade sharpener – and there is some wisdom in this. The Fiskars sharpener is pre-set to the precise 30º angle that their beveled axe heads have – making it easier to maintain that sharp edge that they’re famous for.
The axe does come with a sturdy locking sheath for protection of the head during storage. Clip it on, lock it with your thumb, and you can use the attached handle to hang your axe safely.
The other accessory you may want to invest in is a companion Fiskars X7 hatchet. Should you decide you want to pick up the X27 and the X7 together, they are available as a package deal at a discounted price, which is always nice.
