Fiberglass Rib Patio Umbrellas
Fiberglass umbrellas have historically been too expensive for most non-commercial users to purchase. Their wind resistance and strength is a huge plus, but the cost has been prohibitive. Fortunately, over the past several years, these wind resistant umbrella designs have become cheaper, and are now attainable for many homeowners.
Umbrella ribs are the most common point of failure on an umbrella, and we have all had an experience with a cheap handheld umbrella crumpling up in the wrong direction on a particularly windy day. These ribs are typically made of plastic, or metal, and are not designed for strength in windy conditions.
Patio umbrellas frequently suffer the same fate. Typically a patio umbrella has one or more wind vents on the top to allow air to flow through the umbrella, which will mitigate some of the wind issues, but not all. The second line of defense against wind damage are high-quality fiberglass ribs.
Umbrella Rib Design
Most market umbrella ribs are made of steel, or plastic, wood, or aluminum. These materials are good, but they do not offer the same flexibility that fiberglass does. Fiberglass is generally the best option for umbrella ribs if you’re looking primarily at strength, and the umbrellas we review below all have these fiberglass rib features.
Fiberglass Ribs
Even if a fiberglass rib umbrella gets bent the wrong direction, it can generally get bent back into position without breaking.
Fiberglass ribs are the best umbrella rib material.
Steel Ribs
Steel ribs are quite durable, but not as flexible or as corrosion resistant as fiberglass. These ribs can occasionally get bent if they are left open in a windy environment and can snap if you have the wrong wind gust at the wrong time. They are a good choice, but not the best choice, for a wind resistant umbrella.
Plastic Ribs
Umbrella ribs made of plastic are flexible and light but lack the strength of fiberglass. Generally, plastic ribs are considered to be a step down from steel, and while plastic can be a useful material for umbrellas, it is generally a lower quality choice.
Wooden Ribs
Wooden ribs are commonly found on wooden patio umbrellas. These ribs are beautiful and tend to match the wood of the shaft. Wood is not particularly flexible, nor is it light, but it is strong. Coupled with the proper wind vent, wood may work well, but we would suggest avoiding it if the longevity of your umbrella is paramount.
Aluminum Ribs
Aluminum can be an equally high-quality material choice as steel when it comes to patio umbrella ribs. While aluminum is often connotated with soda cans and foil, aluminum can be a highly refined material. Airplanes are made of a great deal of aluminum, and we put our faith in their strength and flexibility all the time!
Aluminum is lightweight and can be as effective as steel, in umbrella design. However, it is still a step down from fiberglass when it comes to wind resistance.

With all of these umbrellas, a good way to keep the canvas looking as fresh as possible is to invest in a high-quality patio umbrella cover. We’ll start with a comparison table to get the lay of the land, and then go in depth on each umbrella line.

California Umbrella 11′ Aluminum Pole Tilt Crank Patio Umbrella with 8 Fiberglass Ribs
The California Umbrella 11′ line of umbrellas is a full-featured offering, with many significant positives, starting with 8 fiberglass ribs, coupled with a dual-vent canopy system. This pair of features makes the 11′ California Umbrella unbeatable as a wind-proof umbrella, and no other umbrella on our lists offers both options.
With three different pole color options, and 24 canopy options (primarily a high-quality Olefin fabric), this umbrella really is a great choice. The 11′ canopy on this umbrella is big and is great for covering large areas. See our patio umbrella size guide for more information.
Dimensions and Features
- Umbrella Canopy Width: 11′
- Pole Height: 8.5′
- Number of Ribs: 8
- Rib Material: Fiberglass
- Fabric Material: Olefin, Pacifica, Sunbrella
- Shaft Material: Aluminum (three color options)
- Shaft Dimensions: 1.5″
- Wind Vent: Double
The Bottom Line
The one concern we have here is that the tilt function is not our favorite system, and is somewhat prone to breakage. It uses a collar tilt, which is easy to control. Be sure you get a patio umbrella weight that is sufficient for this umbrella, as it is a big one! When the umbrella is tilted, there’s a lot of weight at an angle, and the tilt a potential failure point.
As long as you’re careful with the tilt system, this umbrella has a huge amount to offer! the fiberglass ribs, melded with the double vent canopy, make this umbrella the best wind-resistant umbrella. The wide array of color options, the high-quality Olefin (and better) fabrics, and the warranty all make this umbrella a solid choice.
Just be careful with the tilt.
