The Details
The seats on the Tangkula six-piece set are fairly comfortable and have a pretty low back height. Often modern style sections have low backs that some find uncomfortable. These seat backs are about 1′ high, once compression of the cushion is taken into account.
Underneath the cushions is the same wicker as the rest of the set. The cushions technically do not need to be used, though we can’t imagine the set would be particularly comfortable with no cushions!
Materials Quality
The frame of these units is made of aluminum, which is light and strong, and a good choice for this type of sectional conversation set. Wrapped around the aluminum is a handsome grayish PE wicker weave. PE Wicker isn’t quite as nice as HDPE wicker (see here for more information on outdoor wicker), but is perfectly acceptable in a furniture set in this price range. It is very weather resistant, and can generally be left outside as needed.
That said, it is always wise to cover the set when not in use. A quality cover will certainly extend the useful life of this set.
The cushions are black polyester fabric. They are comfortable, but they fade pretty quickly, so be prepared. They can withstand some water, but it’s best to store these out of the sun in a deck box or other storage system whenever possible, as they will fade quickly.
The cushions are probably the biggest downfall of this set. You could consider spraying them with a UV Protectant [Amazon Link] to try to slow the degradation, but that will only help so much. Regardless, they are easy enough to replace with nicer cushions over time, after they have worn to the point where they need to be replaced.
Assembly
This sectional set does need to be assembled, though all tools and hardware are included. The instructions aren’t too bad, and once you get in the rhythm, it goes pretty quickly. The most important part of the assembly is this: be sure you start by putting each bolt in a furniture piece loosely secured, and then go back for a second round and tighten everything up. If you try to tighten the bolts fully from the start, you’ll run into issues with bolts not lining up.
It’s also helpful to make piles for each furniture piece as you take them out of the box. This way, the assembly will go a little smoother.
The Bottom Line: Decent Patio Furniture Conversation Sets
The Tangkula six-piece outdoor conversation set is very stylish and is a great bargain for those looking for flexible outdoor living furniture. The cushions will almost certainly fade unless you are very careful to store them away from the sun, and the low-back chairs may not be comfortable for everyone’s taste.

One of the most important aspects of an outdoor living set is how comfortable it is. We love the sleek modern styling, but if the furniture is not comfortable, what is the point? The La-Z-Boy Sawyer set is quite a joy to sit on, hits all the materials quality benchmarks, and really is a nice choice for an outdoor conversation set.
Materials Quality
The frames on this garden conversation set are made of steel and are solid and fairly heavy. Wrapped around the steel is a PE wicker weave, which is nice, and comes in a very natural-looking brown tone.
The wicker weave covers the entire furniture pieces, including under the chair cushions. It also wraps all around the table, with the exception of the tempered glass top. We also quite like that the table has a shelf for storage, which is lacking in many of the other chat sets on our list.
The cushions are made of Sunbrella fabric, which in our opinion, is the best outdoor fabric available. The cushion covers are not removable, and should simply be cleaned with a cloth and a mild detergent. They are available in two colors, so you can customize a little bit.
Even though the cushions are high-quality UV resistant, fade resistant, and water resistant Sunbrella, they should be stored away in a deck box or other protected area when not in use. Storing the cushions will absolutely increase the useful life of the fabric.
The cushions are loose and are not attached to the frame at all. If this bothers you, consider some stick-on Velcro straps [Amazon Link].
While this set is designed to be kept outdoors, it is always wise to pick up an outdoor furniture cover to protect your investment. Over time the weather will beat up pretty much anything, and keeping this furniture set under cover when not in use will keep the set ready to use for years to come.
Assembly

The Ohana collection 7 piece sectional conversation set is a winning choice if you like modern outdoor furniture, and we do like modern outdoor furniture! The set is super configurable, built of high-quality materials, and hits a surprisingly good price point given its size and capabilities.
Like many modern outdoor furniture sets, this set is positioned low to the ground. It has a low back, which is about 11″ above the top of the seat cushion (figure a few more inches than that for compression). For those who want a lot of back support, this set may not be ideal. The back is quite wide, though, and ultimately this set is reasonably comfortable for most.
Materials Quality
The materials chosen by Ohana for this set are quite good, and appropriate for a conversation set this size and scale. The frame is made of powder-coated steel and is heavy and solid. The wicker weave is PE wicker, which is not as high quality as HDPE wicker but is a good choice for an outdoor living set in this price range.
The cushions are made of either a high-quality Sunbrella outdoor fabric or a Spuncrylic fabric for the lower quality, cheaper cushions. The Sunbrella is definitely the better option, assuming your cushions will be out in the sun at all. They are a little scratchier but are much more robust, and able to withstand sun and rain quite well.
The covers are zippered and are machine washable, so they’re pretty easy to keep clean. Be sure to wash them on cold/gentle, as you don’t want them to shrink at all!

This set has a decent contemporary look, with some curves and a fairly tall back. The seats only come with a base cushion and do not include any back cushions. You may want to pick up some outdoor throw pillows to give a little more cushion while sitting in these chairs. The Details
The U-Max outdoor furniture patio set is their riff on the typical low, modern style PE Wicker outdoor sectional design. The chairs are fairly low to the ground, like most modern sectional sets, though U-Max has recently raised their seat height from 15″ to 17″ to help make it a bit more comfortable.
The backs are also pretty low, clocking in at right around 25″ high. However, the overall design of the couch is that it is fairly deep, and it is still pretty comfortable even for those who are 6′ tall or over.
There is no warranty with these sets, which is a significant downside compared to some of the other units on our list. But the price is unbeatable!
Materials and Build Quality
The U-max sectional patio furniture set is made of the standard mid-range wicker furniture material set. These pieces are constructed of a powder coated steel frame, with a black PE-wicker weave surrounding the frame, and going fully under the cushions.
The cushions are reasonably thick at 3 1/4″, but are not the best quality. They are only available in the light tan color shown in the images above, which is a big downside compared to the similarly-designed Ohana set.
Assembly
Assembly of these units is required, though it is not terribly complex to put these pieces together. Like all PE wicker furniture, it is best to get the bolts on these units partially secured, and then do a second round and fully secure them. This way, you can be sure that none of the holes are misaligned, and you won’t struggle to get the set together.
The Bottom Line: Great Discount Patio Conversation Sets
This set is very similar to the Ohana 7 piece set mentioned above, but is half the price of the Ohana set without the Sunbrella cushions.
There are no color choices for the cushions on the U-max set, and the cushions are not great quality, but at this price point, you can always purchase new higher quality cushion covers at a later date.
This set is by far the best choice for those on a budget who want modular, modern sectional furniture.
