Coming in with only 5 pieces, but a significantly lower price tag is the BestChoice Products 5 Piece Resin Wicker Rattan Outdoor Furniture Set. This sectional sofa system is cleverly designed, and while it features only 5 pieces, is capable of being configured in a wide variety of ways. The table doubles as an ottoman and both a cushion and glass top are included. The table also offers storage, which is a nice plus. The whole system is well thought out, and quite useful and attractive. If it was a little bigger and offered a bit more of a modern color palette, it would probably be our top choice, but it was narrowly beaten by the Modenzi system. Rounding out our Best Of is the Keter Corfu 4 piece patio furniture set. This set is made with no metal and is completely framed out of PVC resin wicker. Even the screws are made of PVC, and consequently, there is no metal that could rust or tarnish. It’s a great design, and the chairs are sturdy enough to support people up to 300 lbs! We can’t say we love the overall aesthetic, it’s functional but certainly not beautiful. The durability of this setup is quite nice, though, and overall it is a good package for its price. The Modenzi set is made of a durable powder coated aluminum frame, covered by an espresso brown PVC wicker rattan material. The material is light enough to move around easily and is capable of withstanding most of what Mother Nature throws out there. When the weather gets dicey, though, this set should be moved indoors or otherwise covered for protection. The cushions are 4“ thick and are quite comfortable. The covers are easily zipped and unzipped, and the covers are machine washable. The cushions are water resistant, though they should be taken in when not in use, or otherwise stored in a deck box or other storage solution. While the photo above shows throw pillows as well, these are not included in the package. There is no mechanism supplied to attach the individual pieces together to form couches, love seats, etc. Should you plan on getting these in a position and largely leaving them in the same spot, consider using zip ties around the legs to secure them together. Note: you may want to fasten these pieces together with zip ties around the legs if you plan on leaving them in a single configuration for the majority of the time. The frame of this set is made of powder coated steel and is wrapped with a PVC resin wicker rattan material for protection and style. These chairs can support up to 300 lbs of weight, and are weather resistant and can be generally left outside. In the winter months, cover them or otherwise protect them with a furniture cover. The cushions are made of a water-resistant nylon blend and are quite nice. The covers can be easily removed and machine washed as needed. The seat cushions are plush, perhaps 4“ thick, and the back cushions are comfortable and nicely-stuffed. The cushions are a nice creamy white and seem to be pretty stain resistant. You may want to spray Scotch Guard on them to further protect them. Assembly

This package comes in two different large boxes (sometimes on two different trucks, sometimes on separate days!). Assembly of this large set takes some time, perhaps a few hours, but is not particularly difficult. The instructions should be found in the same box as the screws and fasteners, and are pretty decent in quality. The parts of each furniture piece are unfortunately not labeled, so it can be a bit of a jumble getting assembly started. Use the pictures to figure out what goes where, and once you have the parts arranged, assembly goes pretty quickly. One nice assembly decision is that all of the screws are the same size! No time spent determining what screw goes where; you just need to know what piece goes to what furniture unit. Note: some have said they have received this in one huge box, while others receive this in multiple boxes.

The Keter Corfu four-piece furniture set is comfortable and is well designed and structured. This set is sun and water resistant and can be left out in the elements. The cushions are water resistant and are about 1.5“ thick. They are constructed of a soft, padded material covered by a washable water-resistant cover that easily zips on and off. You should take the cushions in, or put them in a deck box, when not in use. It is possible to spray the cushions with Scotch Guard to further protect them. We recommend covering the set or bringing it in during the winter, but it can be left outside during the warmer months. One of the nice attributes of the Keter Corfu line is that the pieces are available as a set (shown here) and also can be purchased individually. So if you decide you need one more armchair to complete your patio set, you can purchase just the matching armchair, as opposed to buying a whole new set. The Corfu line is made of polypropylene resin, and the frame is non-metallic, so there is no risk of rust in the future. The chairs are built to support up to 300 lbs of weight, and all of the chairs have arms. No back cushions are supplied with this furniture set, and it is comfortable enough without cushions as is. However, if you wanted to throw a few pillows on there, a color pop would certainly enhance the looks of this furniture set, and the added pillows would likely make things a bit more comfortable. The feet on this set are wide and flat and will sit pretty nicely on a deck or grassed area without worrying about falling through cracks and small spaces. Assembly

The Keter Corfu furniture set arrives packed like an Ikea furniture box; it does not come assembled. Assembly takes about two hours or so, and no special tools are required to get this all together. The wrench for this set is taped to one of the boxes and is made of red plastic. It’s easy to miss, so keep your eye out. Also, be sure you don’t use too much force tightening the screws, as they can break if you’re too harsh on the set.

The Cosco Products 4 piece Malmo Resin Wicker Patio Set is a stylish, modern, fully-featured patio set available in two colors: brown with teal cushions, or black with gray cushions. The Brown and Teal look much more inviting (to us!). This patio furniture conversation set is a nice package, and while the cushions are a bit thin and lacking, the wicker resin frame is solid. The cushions could be replaced over time or supplemented with other fabric and pillows.

The Cosco Products (note: it’s Cosco, not Costco the bulk retailer) 4 Piece Malmo Resin Wicker garden furniture set includes the following:

• One loveseat
• Two armchairs
• One coffee table with tempered glass top and storage shelf
• Water resistant seat cushions for all chairs

The individual units in the Cosco Products Malmo patio set are made with a steel frame wrapped in resin wicker. The frame is powder coated and should last a while. However, over time the frame could rust if left out in the elements. The resin should last indefinitely and covers the metal completely. The cushions for this set are not water-proof and should be taken in when not in use. They are a bit on the thin side, and over time you may want to swap them out for other seat cushions, as they aren’t the best quality out there. The table glass sits (a bit precariously) on four suction cups, and is attached to each of the legs on the table. One nice feature of the Malmo conversation set is that there is storage space under the glass. For whatever reason, many of these four-piece sets don’t have any storage space in the table, so we appreciate the extra bit of space here. The chairs can support up to 250 lbs of weight and are comfortable. The overall size of these chairs is a bit on the smaller side, and while they are a comfortable size, they are certainly not over-sized patio furniture. If your guests tend toward the larger end of the spectrum, this set may not be for you. See the dimensions below for more information.

Assembly

Assembly of this conversation set is a bit of a nightmare. It comes in a large 100+ pound box, and everything is packed very tightly. Unfortunately, there are no stickers on the parts identifying what furniture piece each part goes to, and the instructions are poor, so be prepared for some difficulty putting it all together. Some of the pieces may not line up perfectly, and you need to be careful not to let the screws get stripped, but once its together, the whole package is solid and comfortable. The Baner Garden 4 piece outdoor furniture set is a nice sectional sofa set with a resin wicker table/ottoman, all topped with smoke gray colored cushions (including the table). The Baner Garden set is available in two color schemes, black with smoke gray cushions, and brown with white cushions. We feel the black with gray cushions looks quite nice.

The Baner Garden 4 Piece outdoor sectional set is a very nicely designed patio furniture set, with a good deal of comfort, and a dual-use ottoman/storage coffee table that is well thought out. It is made of powder coated steel frames, wrapped with durable resin wicker rattan material. The set is quite durable and hardy. The Baner Garden set is capable of being left outdoors in most conditions, though we do suggest covering it or bringing it indoors when the weather gets nasty. The seats can hold up to 300 lbs per seat spot (i.e. one love seat can support two people, each weighing 300 lbs) The cushions are water and mildew resistant, though not waterproof. Users should take the cushions in when not in use, or store them in a deck box if you have one available. Fortunately, the cushion covers are removable and machine washable. The cushions are about 2“ thick, and if you purchase this furniture set, you may want to consider replacing them with thicker cushions over time. They are reasonably comfortable, but a thicker cushion would go a long way. The table comes with both a glass top and a cushion top, so you can use it either way, which is a nice feature. You can’t really put glasses on the cushion unless they are very wide and sturdy.

You may want to have a cordless drill with a drill bit the same end as the wrench that comes with the package, but if you use a drill, be careful not to over-tighten these screws.

Patio Furniture Sectional Set Buyer’s Guide

This buyer’s guide is designed to help buyers understand the advantages and disadvantages of resin wicker patio furniture. We discuss materials, furniture set design, and cleaning and care.

Materials

Patio furniture is generally broken down into three sets of materials: the frame materials (usually metal, occasionally PVC), the covering resin wicker material, and the cushion material.

Furniture Frame Material

Furniture frames are usually made of powder coated steel, and occasionally of powder coated aluminum. The frames are wrapped with resin wicker material for aesthetics, comfort, and durability. Both steel and aluminum are good choices for frame materials, though aluminum may be a little lighter, making aluminum framed furniture easier to move. Additionally, frames are sometimes made of PVC resin as well. These systems are lighter again than aluminum and are guaranteed to be rust-free, as there is no metal. Usually, even the screws and fasteners in these sets are made of PVC as well, making the whole set completely rust-free. These sets may not be as sturdy as metal framed sets, though, and be sure to check the weight limits.

Wrapping Rattan Resin Wicker PVC

Rattan is a traditional woven material that is commonly used on indoor furniture, and sometimes out outdoor furniture, but it is definitely weather-resistant. Most of the time when furniture designers use the words Rattan and Wicker in the context of outdoor furniture, they are referring to a PVC resin wicker rattan material. Rattan resin wicker is made of plastic, and this material is woven (usually) around a metal frame, to form a durable, weather resistant, hardy furniture base.

Cushions

Typically, outdoor cushions are made of polyester or nylon. Virtually all of the cushions on our list are weather resistant, but not weather proof. They can generally handle a light rain but will get soggy in a heavy rain. We suggest bringing in outdoor cushions when not in use, or otherwise storing them in a deck box for protection from the elements. This will help keep them fresh and not smelling mildewy or moldy. If you want to keep your cushions out in the weather, you could consider searching for some Sunbrella fabric, which is a higher end fabric capable of withstanding the elements. Most of the higher end furniture sets feature Sunbrella fabric cushions, but you could consider starting with one of the patio furniture sets below, and then upgrading the cushions to Sunbrella in a few years. You could also supplement with Sunbrella pillows for added texture and beauty.

Outdoor Furniture Set Design

In our list below, most of the rattan effect garden furniture sets come with between 4-7 pieces, with general seating for 4-6 people. Some of the sets are made up of discrete units, and other ones are made up of sectional-style building blocks that can be arranged in a variety of configurations, creating sofas and love seats and chairs out of individual pieces. These sets tend to be a bit more expensive, but they offer a good deal of flexibility of design, and they make it very easy to rearrange the set for an intimate gathering, or open things up for a larger party.

Cleaning Plastic Rattan Patio Furniture

Acetic acid is the only cleaner needed for plastic resin wicker patio furniture. Though the name sounds… caustic… acetic acid is just watered-down vinegar! Acetic acid is made by diluting 1 cup white vinegar with 5-7 cups of water. Mix that up, wash down your furniture with a sponge and the acetic acid solution, and wipe dry with a clean sponge and water, and you’re good to go!

Cleaning Process

Here is a quick breakdown of the cleaning process for resin wicker outdoor furniture.

• Spray Down the Furniture with a hose
• Soak a sponge or rag in acetic acid
• Scrub the furniture until clean
• Rinse with clean water
• Use a toothbrush on hard-to-reach spots
• Dry the furniture when done using a towel (you’ll avoid getting water spots if you do this rather than letting it air dry)

Frequent small clean ups of your furniture are generally better than once-in-a-while deep cleans. Dirt builds up on resin rattan furniture, and it’s easier to take off when the dirt is fairly light. When mud and dirt are caked on your furniture, it can be more difficult to get off, so keep an eye out and grab the sponge when you can!
