Best Mosquito Fogger

Out of the five foggers reviewed here today, a personal favorite is the best mosquito fogger on the market: the Smith Performance Sprayers Professional Pest Control Electric Thermal Fogger (Smith Performance Fogger). It comes in first place because it’s easy to transport, runs well, produces a dry fog, and doubles as a deodorizer for interior spaces.

It’s also quite expensive, unfortunately.

While being a little more expensive than some of the others on our list, this fogger pays for itself by being an insect-killing machine that is easy to clean, refill, and reuse.

Runner-Up: Best Propane Mosquito Fogger

The Runner Up is the Burgess 1443 Propane Insect Fogger, which is a residential, propane-powered mosquito fogger that won’t break the bank. This smaller model generates enough insecticide fog to cover a regular-sized yard, is simple to use, easy to clean, and small and lightweight.

It’s perhaps not as effective as the Smith above, but it doesn’t need to be tethered to a power cord, so it can go anywhere: camping, the boat, etc.

Mosquito Control

Managing the mosquito population in your yard can be a difficult task, depending on where you are. It’s also an important one! Mosquitos are relatively-likely to carry diseases, and in many ways are much scarier than, say, sharks or snakes. They’re much likelier to harm you and your loved ones than sharks or snakes are, though we don’t usually think of them that way.

Controlling your mosquito population should start with removing any standing water, in order to prevent them from breeding. From there, consider mosquito-repellent plants and  mosquito lights. You should also consider tiki torches and eucalyptus tiki torch fuel instead of citronella.

If none of that works, then it’s time to move onto the chemical sprays and foggers!

How an Insect Fogger Works

A mosquito fogger is a specific pest control device where liquid insecticides are poured in and heated. The heat generates a pesticide fog which kills mosquitoes and other insects that make it difficult to enjoy their time outdoors. There are a couple of different levels of foggers, including commercial and residential.

Most use foggers to primarily target mosquitoes, though most will also work against biting flies, noseeums, and the like.

Propane vs. Electric Mosquito Fogger

Insect Foggers are powered by either propane or electricity. The propane models typically connect up to a 1-gallon propane tank, while the electric ones plug in to an extension cord. There are currently no great quality battery-powered options, though these will likely come soon.

Electric Foggers

If you want to go electric, you’ll need a good extension cord long enough to reach everywhere you want to fog on your property, and avoid tangles and cord hassles. You’ll typically need a 3-prong cord, in either 10, 12, or 14 gauge thickness, in order to use your fogger. Be sure to check the specs for your individual choice.

Of course, you don’t need to keep buying new propane refills each time, which is always nice.

Unintended Consequences of Mosquito Fogging

When you use a mosquito fogger, you’re killing mosquitoes, and potentially other insects as well. These insects may be beneficial insects, and may be the kinds of insects that prey on mosquitoes. If you kill off those, you may end up with a worse mosquito population down the road!

For this reason, it’s always best to use these foggers as a last resort, and to keep in mind that there are consequences to mosquito fogging beyond just mosquito control.

Residential and Commercial Models

Most people need a residential model, but a commercial type is better suited for individuals who have larger yards. Buyers will also need to choose between a model powered by propane or electricity.

Insecticides

Each insect fogger works with a liquid insecticide. Certain models are only compatible with certain insecticides, but the general idea is that the fogger heats the liquid insecticide and expels it through the fogger, into your yard.

After a few minutes, the fog dissipates, and the mosquito problem generally goes away for 5-7 hours. Just enough time for a solid BBQ party or outdoor movie night.

Fog vs. Smoke

If you have neighbors nearby, you may want to let them know before you use your fogger, at least the first time. The insecticide is poisonous, and people should stay out of the area until the fog dissipates.

Use as a Deodorizing Sprayer
